Let’s create an opportunity to begin the healing process.
What is trauma?
Trauma is your mind-body reaction to exposure to actual or threatened death, significant injury, or violence, as defined by the DSM-5. It can be a single incident, like a life-altering car crash, or a series of compounded traumatic events, such as repeated abuse.
Examples of traumatic experiences include:
- Physical/sexual/emotional abuse
- Accidents/fire
- Childhood neglect
- Natural disasters
- Loss of a loved one through homicide/suicide
- Severe injuries
- Violent attacks
- Witnessing trauma to others
- Experiences while performing job duties (e.g., first responders)
Post-traumatic stress symptoms
Trauma can affect your thoughts, feelings, sensations, and multiple areas of your life. It compromises your ability to work, complete everyday tasks, interact with others, function, or sleep.
Common post-traumatic stress symptoms include:
- Avoiding talking about trauma
- Avoiding people, locations, or circumstances related to trauma
- Being on edge
- Constant worry or fear
- Difficulty focusing
- Flashbacks or intrusive thoughts about the event(s)
- Lack of motivation and hope
- Moodiness or irritability
- Nightmares or sleep problems
If you are struggling with any of these lasting effects of trauma, therapy can support you.
